Breaking the Shackles of Stigma: Rita Ben’s Courageous Fight Against Witchcraft Accusations

In the quiet village of Sanjoi, Rita Ben’s life took a tragic turn after the sudden death of her husband in 2018. What began as grief soon turned into a nightmare as deep-rooted superstitions within the community pushed villagers to brand her a “Daakan” (witch). Every misfortune—whether sickness or the death of livestock—was blamed on her. Once respected, she suddenly found herself isolated, excluded from social functions, and emotionally cornered in her own home.

Hope emerged when Rita Ben met Mangu Ben, a member of Vanita Shakti Mahila Sangathan. Encouraged to attend a hamlet meeting, Rita Ben found the courage to introduce herself, albeit timidly. A simple yet powerful message from Mangu Ben—“If you do not raise your voice, no one will hear you”—ignited a spark within her. She soon joined the sangathan, understanding her rights, connecting with supportive women, and slowly reclaiming her confidence and agency.

Rita Ben’s journey toward empowerment strengthened her resilience. When threatened late one night by her in-laws, who believed she was a witch, she bravely contacted both Mangu Ben and the 181 Women’s Helpline, filing a formal complaint. The next morning, the helpline team intervened, ensuring her safety. Her courage not only protected her life but also challenged harmful beliefs within the community. Rita Ben’s story stands as a powerful reminder of how awareness, solidarity, and timely action can break the chains of superstition and transform lives.
